After completing my Engineering, I was not interested in joining IT as no company was interested to hire me. I had poor score and moreover, I’m not a kind of guy who can sit before computer for 12 hours. In 2001, I got offer in a logistics company and there is no looking back. I have met so many customers in these 10 years and very rarely I meet customers who are really understanding and magnanimous. Recently something happened in our company and I learned really a great lesson for myself.
We have a customer from Kerala. The Company’s Partners are extremely hard-working and with smart ideas & plans they are assured to grow in larger scale. One of the partners is Mr.Lijish and he is one who knows me well and interacts with me for shipping & logistics activities. In feb 2011, we custom cleared their container and to be delivered to Kerala. The sales tax dept of Kerela has one of the most stringent rules and regulations followed at check post to avoid any evading of sales tax. For all vehicles entering Kerala, FORM 15 Delivery Note is mandatory and all the 15 blank points are to filled and signed at the bottom of the form. Even the smallest mistake is not tolerated and fined exorbitantly.
Our Clearance Dept failed to fill this form completely and the container was held by Kerala sales tax dept at check post. Though the customer warned us several times about the same, we failed to understand the seriousness and didn’t fill up all the points, as few points were looking not much of importance to the shipment. After two days of running from pillar to post, the customer had to pay heavy penalty and advance tax and the container was set free.
These two days I was greatly tensed and couldn’t concentrate in my daily business activities. I was completely worried for this customer and who is really good by heart and when I heard the container was set free, I was relaxed. I didn’t call the customer for next two days, neither he did. I had never kept this attitude in last ten years, what ever be the problem, I atleast pick-the-phone to answer the customer and hear his blasting. But this time, I felt so much guilty and I had no heart to speak to him. I was ashamed of myself to give such a trouble for good customer.
Mr.Lijish called me on 3rd day at around 10.30 pm, and we spoke till 11.30 and in this one hour of conversation, he never shouted at me or showed signs of anger and never said a word about our mistake, he just said “make sure sir, this doesn’t repeat”. I felt this man is really Magnanimous. I assured him and promised to provide the best service and also reduce the expenses at larger extent to compensate the losses he incurred. He said, whether you reduce my expenses or not, I would do my business with you, so don’t worry. As promised I kept my word and would continue till we serve him.
I was really surprised how a man can be so generous and from where does such a quality come for few people among humans who are so much mean!!! Though I’m generous in nature, but never to this extent and I said to myself, till death I should remember this incident and never would scold someone for their mistake. Being magnanimous makes us happy and peaceful. I salute Mr.Lijish for his generosity and kindness and would never forget him for teaching the most important lesson in life.
After this incident i promised within myself to be more magnanmious. One of our sales executives from Kerala, behaved in a non-ethical manner and really betrayed the company and myself, for a moment I was angry but suddenly rememberd my promise and let him go with smile and advised him for his better future. This incident was a test to my promise and I won the test magnanimously.
